The All-Seeing Eye

The Eye of Providence (or the all-seeing eye of God) is a symbol showing an eye often surrounded by rays of light or a glory and usually enclosed by a triangle. It represents the eye of God watching over humanity (or divine providence). -Wikipedia

We know Wikipedia is always right.
(Snicker!)
But I think this is a commonly accepted definition.

What is this eye symbol that shows up every.freaking.where
in our popular culture and religious iconography?
What does it mean?

There's the Eye of Sauron from Lord of the Rings.
There is even a version called
Eye of Sauron for Your Home,
like Fireplace for Your Home on Netflix.
I have an awkward sense of humor because I think that's hilarious.

These two guys defeated that big eye of fire.

There is the creepy eye pyramid on American money. (Does it look sinister to you too?) Apparently, it was in use on our money about ten years before a secretive group called the Freemasons began using it and it developed into a symbol of mystery, intrigue,
and, in modern times, conspiracy theories.

This is all kinds of creepy.

There is even one in the Grand Kremlin Palace. Did you know it was torn down by the Communists when the building
became less of a palace and more of an office space,
but was restored by Boris Yeltsin's government in the 1990's?
Way to go, Yeltsin!

So Much Gold.

It is an enduring symbol. Symbols usually tell us about ourselves.
What does this one say about us?

I once read an online account of a person called into Christian ministry. They saw an eye appear before them in a room. That weirded me out, but they described it as a sign from God. So...I am still weirded out, but maybe I shouldn't be. I am, though.

It appears in many other places.
For example, on Coats of Arms and Seals,
various currency, the Constitution of Serbia,
Salt Lake Temple in Salt Lake City, Utah,
and- I kid you not- a WWE,
World Wrestling Entertainment,
tag team called The Ascension.

Remember the Prince girls from the 80's who had
their hair over to one side with just the one eye showing?
I have no idea if that was
Providence or fabulousness,
but I remember it was a thing.

Have you seen The Eye?

What do you think, good, bad, stolen from good, stolen from bad?

I see it a lot and I wonder if symbols mean anything these days. How do they affect us?

  2. Well, the golden room says plenty, and to me it is not good. Perhaps worship of gold or money. I agree that all of this is totally creepy. Anything or symbol that has to be kept secret is not good! There are many theories about the eye and the pyramid. But who really knows the truth.

    1. There are many theories. I think maybe it started out reminding people of God watching over us protectively, but then came to mean something else...like control or a menacing presence.

I kind of like the gold room! I mean, for a palace. I wouldn't want my house to look like that.

  3. I have always been kind of fascinated by "the eye" thing. Did you know that on the upper right hand side of the dollar bill is a little "creature" (or spider or owl) and on the back side in the upper left hand side behind the one there is a cross?

I have always heard that the eye was the "all-seeing eye" and came from the freemasons but who knows? I do think there are some kind of creepy things attached to things with 'eyes'.

Hope you have a great night- xo Diana

    1. Ok, I got out a dollar bill. I see the cross behind the one and I kind of think I see the owl (or spider). I am going to look for close-up photos online because I just can't quite tell for sure... It is creepy, isn't it?

    2. Okaay...I googled. Well, that brought up a whole lot more questions and, wow, I wonder why that little owl is there?

  4. A lot of religious symbols have been around for a very long time--- seems like every religion can find an old symbol or legend to co-opt.

  5. We Christians are happy with the all-seeing (and preserving) eye of God, but I think others see this eye as a threat?
If you are honest and sincere, this is not a problem, but dishonesty and dark matters are to be kept secret.
Maybe those other eyes are from evil.

That is so true about dark matters being kept secret. Being exposed to the light would destroy them.

  6. Guess we have to keep an eye out, friend Sandi … Am very aware and cautious of the subject you are referring to … The book/ movie: 1984 is coming to mind … Thanks for this very thought provoking post … Love, cat.

    1. keep an eye out! Ha ha ;-)

I never read 1984, unless you count just living in today's weird world.

      Thanks, Cat.

  7. The eye has many symbols.
It depends on the perspective. may be religious, artistic, social, masonic, etc.

    1. Yes! Thank you, Catalin. I'd rather just see it as God's watchful presence.

  8. Interesting post Sandi. No, I have never seen The Eye in the strictest sense of seeing The Eye, only in movies and books but can’t even remember which one. It has been long ago. I have this one friend who believes in good omens.

  9. The Christian symbol of the "Eye of Providence" can be seen on paintings and frescoes in many churches ;) When I attended my catechism lessons as a child we did a lot of drawing and when we wanted to "draw God" we used a symbol of the eye of Providence.

  10. Dan Brown certainly has made a career out of hidden symbols in pretty much everything, including the dollar bill's symbology.

  11. Oh, my, Sandi! I do agree with you...especially on how creepy the Eye is that is on our money.

  12. Hi Sandi,
I have never heard of the eye of Providence, and I don't see anything about it in the Word of God, the scriptures.
    Where you say:-
'I once read an online account of a person called into Christian ministry. They saw an eye appear before them in a room. '
I would like to read that online account if possible, do you know how I would find it?

I always believe that I must test these kind of things to see if they line up with scripture - that usually leads me to tell what is true regarding 'Christianity'.

    1. It was on a writer's website called Gather. The person wrote it in a comment on something I had written, but I do not even remember their name, just what they said. Gather is no longer in existence, so I do not know where it could be found.

I don't recall ever reading about the eye symbol in scripture. I think it started as art and then became tradition.

  13. Very, very interesting. First thing that came to my mind was "For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him." I am aware of the eye on the dollar bill and also having to do with the Masons somehow, so I'm just not sure about all the meaning of those. And I did read 1984 as someone above mentioned and always wondered how the government would keep an eye on us, but now it's very obvious due to our phones and the way our spending and locations are tracked.

  14. I think there are far more hidden messages in things that we realize, like life I suppose some are evil and some are good, maybe its all in how we perceive them If I want it to be evil I will see it as evil if I want it to be good I will see the good,, me,,, polly anna,, probably, lol but I confess , some of this stuff scares me lol,,,

  20. What an interesting and informative post! I have been fascinated by this topic, the all seeing eye. Especially it's appearance on some types of currency.

  21. I love these kinds of articles! I really love this. there are just few people talk about these kinds of stuff. Have you tried looking at the masonry? I think they have the "eye" symbol too and this also directs to the Illuminatis. :)

  22. Wow. Those are some deep thoughts and I am certainly not prepared to offer any insight that is going to help clarify the matter. It's almost 6 pm on a Friday so I don't have a lot left in tank as I am thinking about the weekend and enjoying not being at work for 2 days. Hope you got some good feedback from your readers. Take care.
