“Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross.
It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.”
Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’” Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.” John 19:19-22
He wrote that himself. He took the time to sit and write a sign.
This man was like a king, yet he did this.
Sandi: It is a beautiful and touching Scripture for sure, when doing Eucharistic Adoration almost weekly I contemplate what Jesus Christ did for us all.

ReplyDeletePilate is a complex character in what happened at the time. We do not know if he was secretly a believer. Being a Roman leader he could certainly not have made his views known if he were a believer. He it was who asked Jesus "What is truth?" when Jesus claimed to witness to the truth. (John 18:37).
ReplyDeleteOne could ask whether he was a victim of circumstances; at the wrong place at the wrong time. As Roman leader he could not possibly have let Jesus go free. Hence the proverbial washing of his hands.
Is he to be pitied or loathed? What would any of us have done in his situation? Let Jesus go and most certainly face execution with his family at the hands of Rome?
Did he seek forgiveness from God, I wonder?
God bless.
He could have stopped it, yet it was God's plan.
ReplyDeleteWow! he didn't change the inscription, I think it is possible to know about God, but not know Him intimately! Thanks for sharing.

Or was he twisting the knife because of his disdain for the Jews. It will be interesting to see who we will see in eternity...
ReplyDeleteHi Sandi, I think he could have been a believer in Jesus because he said that he found no basis for the charge against Him.
ReplyDeleteLet's hope and pray that he became a believer if he wasn't one at that time. Great thought to ponder, Sandi!
ReplyDeleteWho knows?
ReplyDeleteI was thinking the same thing as Ellen. However, we won't know for certain until we get Home. :) Interesting, Sandi. xo
ReplyDeleteI have often wondered about this. We may find out when we get to heaven.
ReplyDeleteI do believe we will see Pilate in heaven. That's my answer.
