What is Yom Teruah?

What is Yom Teruah?

When the first sliver of the new moon appears in the sky, the leaders of Israel know the dates of the Feasts of the Lord. Until then no one knows the day, only the season.

Yom Teruah, The Day of Trumpets, also called Rosh Hashanah, is a Feast of the Lord during which trumpets (shofar) are blown as a memorial to return to the Lord.

“On the first day of the seventh month you shall have a holy convocation. You shall not do any ordinary work. It is a day for you to blow the trumpets," Numbers 29:1

Words of Jesus in

Matthew 24: 29-42

Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates. Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place.  Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left. Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one left. Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.

Is He talking about Yom Teruah?

  1. Yom Teruah is the biblical name of Rosh Hashana. 'Truah' means the blast of the shofar (the trumpet).
You and your husband seem to be a nice couple, why not give us a clear picture, Sandi? The one near the inscription is not clear enough.

  2. Hello Sandi: It is amazing to me that so many do not believe in the Lord, the will come, and many will be left behind, that is when they will try and repent it will be too late.
So many signs are pointing to the second coming.
Thank-you for sharing this beautiful post about Teruah.

  3. Whether this passage specifically refers to Yom Teruah is a matter of interpretation and can vary among different scholars and believers I think.

  5. Hello Sandi, No, until your post, I hadn't had a thought of the Feast of Trumpets this year. I hadn't heard this name. My previous church's pastor spoke about Rosh Hashanah each year. I find it interesting that they must wait for the sliver of the new moon. Thank you for sharing this with us. Have a terrific week! Thanks for visiting me at Harvest Lane Cottage, and for writing back to me.

  6. Dear Sandi! I have no idea about Yom Teruah. What worries me most is the death of Yevgeny Prigozhin, the founder of the Wagner group. I am very concerned about the loss of life in a fire in Hawaii. How much money did Biden promise the families of the dead people? The inhabitants of this state have lost their relatives, their homes, all their possessions.
It seems to me that President Biden and his government think more about Ukraine than about the inhabitants of their country. I hope this man will never be elected President of the United States again.

  7. Is that the only event that has the blowing of trumpets? Interesting question.

  8. I have always believed that these verses are talking about the second coming of Jesus, when He will take up the remnant.

  16. Sandi what a wonderful post. So much of the meaning in the New Testament is tied back to the Old. I guess the biggest question we need to ask ourselves; are we ready for His Return?
