This becomes even more evident when another priest arises in the likeness of Melchizedek, who has become a priest, not on the basis of a legal requirement concerning bodily descent,
but by the power of an indestructible life.
For it is witnessed of him,
“You are a priest forever,
after the order of Melchizedek.”
Melchizedek is such a mystery throughout the Bible.

I just read this passage in my devotions last night!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Betsy. Its quite a mystery. I need to understand and study it some more.

Some believe Melchizedek was Jesus. I taught a church lesson on him once.
ReplyDeleteThe passages in Genesis 14 about Abram and Melchizedek were well- known by these Christian Jews to whom the book of Hebrews was originally written. Melchizedek shows up again in Psalm 110 where his priesthood is noted as forever. The believing Hebrews understood and had more than likely practiced the sacrifices at the temple (still standing at the time this epistle was written) with the Levitical priests before they had become believers. It was imperative for them to know Jesus was their eternal High Priest, the once for all sacrifice (Hebrews 10). Many ideas, and or theories, are written about Melchizedek, this 'mysterious figure". I'm still learning...
DeleteThank you, Cathy and Ginny!
