A Question

Holiness, holiness is what I long for
Holiness is what I need
Holiness, holiness is what You want from me

But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do,

for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:15

The "it is written" referenced here is found in many verses of

Leviticus, Deuteronomy, and probably elsewhere. Here's one:

Speak to all the congregation of the sons of Israel and say to them,

‘You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy. Leviticus 19:2

What is holiness?

  1. I just couldn't find the words so I went looking. This is what I found . . Holiness in the highest sense belongs to God ( Isaiah 6:3 ; Revelation 15:4 ), and to Christians as consecrated to God's service, and in so far as they are conformed in all things to the will of God ( Romans 6:19 Romans 6:22 ; Ephesians 1:4 ; Titus 1:8 ; 1 Peter 1:15 ). Thank you for inspiring me to go further and learn more. I have always just thought of God when I thought of holiness.

  3. Beautifully shared Sandi, and really, a powerful question! I was curious to read the answers above. I may pose to my bible study group. Indeed, what is holiness, and what does it mean to be holy, as He is holy. I believe it means that in every aspect of our lives, we seek to have the mind of Christ working within us, changing us into His image. We cannot be holy without His spirit indwelling us, changing us, teaching us. So I pray for more of the Spirit of Christ, changing my mind into the mind of Christ, so that I would think as He thinks, react like He reacts, and love like He loves. I can do none of these things without His spirit within me. Good question to ponder today! Blessings to you!

    1. Marilyn,

Thank you for sharing that. Think as He thinks, react as He reacts, and love like He loves. Amen! And...I can do none of these things without His spirit within me.

  4. That's deep! I think of awe, perfection, sacred. It's one of those words that is so hard to describe.

  5. Deep question. I think God is holiness and we should try to remain holy and follow him as holy as we can.

  6. Hi Sandi, good question and discussion. Blessings!๐Ÿ’›
Just to add to the conversation, To be holy means "to be set apart" ,
and then I suppose there is a related question, what does it mean to `be set apart`...!

    1. Set apart. Yes! The longer I live the more I see our modern world as something to be apart from. I say modern, but I mean unholy.

  7. Being holy is having a permanent one-to-one connection with God.

    God bless.

  8. Sandi - great question - love Victor's answer. I know the only way I can be Holy is to be connected to the Lord Jesus. His holiness covers me - praise God.

  9. Hi Sandi, I believe 'Holiness' is God's ways and thoughts, which we start to learn when we become born again of God's Holy Spirit.

  10. Hi Sandi,
A great question for all of us to think about. Thank you. I think of Mary when I think of Holy. How she answered, what was asked of her, even though she knew it would be very difficult. I pray that I walk with God in my actions and strive to be Holy for Him.

    1. Carla, I wonder if her decisions came easy to her. I wonder what she thought and how she felt. I wonder if she was afraid.

  11. God is holy. Holiness is purity. Our journey of life is a constant struggle to keep eliminating the impurities from ourselves and keep trying to be bit pure so he can be close to so we find peace
