King of the Jews

 

Two others, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him. And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments. And the people stood by, watching, but the rulers scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!” The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” There was also an inscription over him, 

“This is the King of the Jews.”

The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. 

He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” 

Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 

Philip found Nathanael and said to him, 

“We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also 

the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” 

Nathanael said to him, 

“Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” 

Philip said to him, 

“Come and see.” 

Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, 

“Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!” 

Nathanael said to him, 

“How do you know me?” 

Jesus answered him, 

“Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 

Nathanael answered him,  

“Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” 

Jesus answered him, 

“Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

Messiah

Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the Sanhedrin. “What are we accomplishing?” they asked. “Here is this man performing many signs. If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation.” 

Then one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, spoke up, “You know nothing at all! You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.” 

He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one.
